Stand-up storyteller James Judd will perform at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m.

A headliner of NPR‘s "Snap Judgment," James Judd is often compared to David Sedaris and Oscar Wilde. Judd connects with audiences as he shares stories classified as “spectacular public embarrassments and utter failures.” However humiliating, they affirm that part of being human is telling the stories that have happened to us, emphasizing that even in the face of failure, it’s getting up and moving forward that matters.

The Washington Post says, “Judd’s conversation style is loud, lightning fast and nonstop — he doesn’t seem to need to breathe as much as a typical human — and the result is a constantly engaging pileup of quips. It can take a few moments for a joke to register, but by then Judd has unfurled a few more laugh-worthy lines. One of Judd’s biggest assets is his delivery, which rarely feels rehearsed, as if he’s simply recounting these absorbing personal anecdotes over dinner. And his talents extend to physical humor, whether he’s imitating a shark or mimicking an oafish boat captain.”

Reserved seating tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday, December 6, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales, please call 509-876-1662.

LOOKING FOR TIGER LILLY, starring Anthony Hudson

    Whitman College, Harper Joy Theatre

    January 30 th . @ 7pm (One Show Only! Approximately 1 hour)

    FREE Admission, no reservations required.

“Touching on Disney’s Peter Pan, mid-century cigar-box Indian depictions, the absurdity of racial classification, and poignant family memories, Looking for Tiger Lily promises to be one of those rare identity-oriented shows that might actually appeal to audiences much broader than those directly implicated.”-  Brett Campbell, Oregon ArtsWatch

Starring Anthony Hudson – the human vessel for Portland’s premiere drag clown Carla Rossi – LOOKING FOR TIGER LILY utilizes song, dance, drag, and video to put a queer spin on the ancestral tradition of storytelling. Asking what it means for a queer mixed Native person to experience their heritage through white normative culture as they recount growing up watching the 1960 production of “Peter Pan” featuring Sondra Lee’s blonde, blue-eyed “Indian Princess” Tiger Lily, Anthony (and Carla) draw from a songbook stretching across Disney’s “Pocahontas” to Cher’s “Half-Breed.” Not just autobiography, LOOKING FOR TIGER LILY is a coming-of-age story that's more than cowboys versus Indians.

“As genderqueer as it is white-appropriative, ‘Peter Pan’ is a film Hudson still strives to justify his love for, exalting it to a canon of queer classics like ‘Hedwig’ and ‘Rocky Horror.’ Why did a young Hudson learn by heart the musical number ‘Ugg-A-Wugg,” which parodies Native American languages as funny-sounding gibberish? Who knows. Why does a young Hedwig enjoy singing to himself with his head in the oven?”-A.L. Adams, Oregon ArtsWatch

Clip from Risk/Reward Festival, Portland, 2016

This performance is made possible through a grant from the Mellon Foundation for Community Engagement. Anthony Hudson is hosted by the Department of Theatre and Dance, Whitman College. A short talkback will occur directly after the performance. For more information please contact the HJT Box Office at (509) 527-5180 or Daniel Schindler.

We hope to see you all at the show!

FIRE STORIES: The Photography of John F. Marshall & the Osborne Panoramas

    January 31 - April 10, 2020

Opening Event: Panel Discussion with John F. Marshall and Dr. Paul Hessburg, Friday, January 31st at 5:30 in Olin Auditorium 138 with Reception in the Gallery to follow

Today, fires still affect every living thing in the American West. Will they help or harm our Blue Mountain landscapes? Come and find out!

This dynamic presentation of images and text offers fascinating insights about forest landscapes and the integral role of wildfires. On display are historical photographs, known collectively as the Osborne Panoramas, taken from mountain-top fire lookouts in the 1930s. Many of the featured panoramas came from locations in the nearby Blue and Wallowa Mountain region, including Table Rock at the head of Mill Creek. These panoramas are shown alongside their modern equivalent, current landscapes, photographed by John F. Marshall, an accomplished landscape photographer and wildlife biologist from Wenatchee, Washington. Through his carefully curated compositions, Marshall reveals what happens in the 25 years after a forest burns.

In conjunction with these panoramas, an Osborne Photo Recording Transit is on display. This is the original camera type that shot the 1930s images. Only 10 of these devices were made, and only two are known to still exist.

In addition to his photographs, Marshall teamed up with Dr. Paul F. Hessburg, a U.S. Forest Service Research Scientist and UW Professor. With additional support from Wallowa Resources, together Marshall and Hessburg have created a vibrant didactic display. Throughout the Sheehan Gallery, informational panels describe the landscape and fire ecology of our region, highlighting the way past fires have crafted a complex forest mosaic that seldom exists today. Through research-based descriptions and Marshall's engaging imagery, wildfire is presented as both end and beginning, inseparable from the landscapes it shapes.

Sheehan Gallery is located in Olin Hall on Whitman College campus. The gallery is free and open to the public.

    Open Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-5:00pm, Saturday/Sunday, 12:00-4:00pm or by Appointment.

Wolf Fork Canyon Study: The photography of Tara J. Graves

    January 31 — April 10, 2020

Whitman College Breezeway Gallery, Olin Hall

Walla Walla native Tara J. Graves received her BFA in Photography (with a focus in fine art) from San Francisco's Academy of Art University in 2013. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings Graves professional fine art portfolio contains series in the genres of night photography, landscape, architecture, water, and topography. In addition to her personal creative practice, Graves has been a professional photographer for the Walla Walla Foundry. Currently, she is the Assistant to the Sheehan Gallery. Graves also owns and operates Walla Walla's ArtEscape Studios, which provides exhibition and work spaces for local artists.

In 1928, in the Blue Mountains outside of Dayton, WA, Graves' great grandfather purchased land at Wolf Fork Canyon. Here, he built a one room log cabin next to Wolf Fork Creek. This cabin and the landscape around it featured significantly in Grave's youth as a place of awe and inspiration and as a seasonally shifting sanctuary for wildlife and human wanderers.

After seventeen years living and working in San Francisco, Graves returned to Walla Walla in 2014. Spending time once again at the family cabin and surrounding area, she found herself just as fascinated by the Wolf Creek environment as she did in childhood. Of course, the landscape had been significantly changed by natural elements in the years she was away. "Water and fire," she says, "had been particular sculptors." Gripped by a desire to document this rediscovered landscape as she encounters it between nature's shifts, Graves began what's become her ongoing Wolf Fork Canyon Study series. In terms of her photographic practice, this project has taken Graves in a new direction.

Historically, the landscapes she captured were generally urban and their compositions focused more on monumental scenic expanses. In the Wolf Fork Canyon Study series, however, traditional landscape shots are accompanied by macro shots, revealing minute details held within the main image. For Graves "incorporating this macro photography into the studies takes me deeper into the larger landscape -- within inches of these secondary subjects. It leads me to explore the land differently than I normally would and causes me to pay more attention to individual and even more temporal details.

In addition to these landscapes and their companion images, Graves has included in her Wolf Fork Canyon Study a series of water triptychs that also employ a macro sensibility. In these pieces the camera's ability to record and isolate the Creek's movement and flow produces compositions that become almost painterly in their varying degrees of abstraction.

Sheehan Gallery is located in Olin Hall on Whitman College campus. The gallery is free and open to the public.

    Open Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-5:00pm, Saturday/Sunday, 12:00-4:00pm or by Appointment.

Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, West My Friend has an acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies that challenges the conventions of popular music. The band features pure and thrillingly elastic vocals with catchy arrangements of bass, guitar, mandolin, and accordion that draw from jazz, classical, folk, and pop influences.

We asked and you answered! Beginning this September our Youth Clay Creations will be held the first and third Saturdays of each month, unless it lands on a holiday. That means we’ll be there each time helping with building ideas such as pinch pots, slab constructed boxes, free-form clay sculptures and so much more! Students will then have the flexibility of creating on their own timeline and glaze as pieces have been bisque fired. We do get messy so make sure to send your student in suitable clothes. We still appreciate registering early so we can always make sure we have enough clay.

    Sheehan Gallery presents
Touchstones: The process & Person of Photographer Mary Randlett

    January 31 - April 10, 2020

Curator's Talk by Sheehan Gallery Director, Daniel Forbes: Friday, March 6th @ 5:30pm in Olin 138

In 2019, Whitman College was gifted an extraordinary archive of materials centered on renowned Northwest photographer and Whitman alum Mary Randlett '47.

Born in Seattle in 1924, Mary Randlett grew up in an artistically-engaged environment. Her mother, Elizabeth Bailey Willis, was the second curator of Washington University's Henry Art Gallery and an enthusiastic promoter of Seattle's Northwest School artists. Randlett's own interest in art through the medium of photography emerged early (she produced her first photo album at 10 years old). Even during her time as a Whitman student, it was remarked that she could often be found in what was then the Billing's darkroom, processing her latest batch of photos.

After graduating from Whitman, over the course of her life, Randlett's photographs were the subject of over 30 solo exhibitions and her images have been featured in numerous books. She was also the recipient of several prestigious honors, including an Anne Gould Hauberg Artist Image Award.

Among her many photographic genres, Randlett is known as perhaps the most significant visual documentarian of Seattle's creative community. A master of portraiture, her photographs immortalized significant Northwest artists and poets like Mark Tobey, George Tsutakawa, Viola Patterson, Jacob Lawrence, and Theodore Roethke. Among the many artists she worked with, in the early 1960's, Randlett struck up a friendship with Northwest School painter and later Walla Walla resident Neil Meitzler. These two artists went on to share an enduring creative camaraderie that spanned close to half a century until Meitzler's death in 2009.

An avid correspondent, in addition to letters, over the years Randlett shared exhibition announcements, news clippings, and handmade cards with Meitzler and his partner, artist and ceramics expert Ikune Sawada. She also sent prints of her work, contact sheets, and darkroom "mishaps" she found interesting. In captions on the backs of some of the photographic prints she sent,

Randlett credits Meitzler for helping her hone her own visual acuity in landscape photography, another genre she became renowned for. A comparison of her landscape photos and Meitzler's canvases offers clear evidence of how these two artists inspired each other.

Following Randlett's passing in January 2019, this treasure of her correspondence and artwork has been donated to the Sheehan Gallery by Ikune Sawada in memory of Neil Meitzler and in honor of Mary Randlett. In Touchstones, selections of these materials are formally presented, supplemented with borrowed images from Randlett's portfolio held by the University of Washington.

The resulting exhibit offers a rare glimpse into a remarkable friendship between artists. It also provides intimate and illuminating insight into Randlett's personal creative process. All together, this assembled archive paints a picture of an iconic Northwest photographer as striking as one of Mary Randlett's own photographic portraits.

Sheehan Gallery is located in Olin Hall on Whitman College campus. The gallery is free and open to the public.

    Open Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-5:00pm, Saturday/Sunday, 12:00-4:00pm or by Appointment.

Carnegie Picture Lab presents Storybook Art at the Library

Carnegie Picture Lab announces Storybook Art, a new children’s program series at the Walla Walla Public Library.  The sessions will be offered once a month from 2:30 – 4:00pm on Wednesdays to provide an after-school enrichment program for elementary age students following early dismissal from public schools.  Each lesson will includestorytelling, Artful Thinking and art making projects inspired by and connected to the featured children’s literature book:

    • January 22:  The Hello Goodbye Window – Tissue Paper Collage

    • February 19:  Harold and the Purple Crayon – Drawing with Wire

    • March 18:  The Dot – Creating Dot Monoprints

    • April 15:  The Big Orange Splot -  Creating Your Dream House

    • May 13:  Rainbow Weaver - Weaving Project

In her book, Through the Eyes of a Child, Donna Norton stresses “the role that literature plays in nurturing and expanding the imagination” (2010, p. 4).  Children’s literature promotes the development of children’s internal imaginations; art making provides the opportunity for concrete expression of their creative imagination.

The mission of Carnegie Picture Lab is to nourish creativity by supporting and enhancing art education for elementary school children in the Walla Walla Valley.  Currently delivering art education/art making lessons in 13 area elementary schools, Carnegie Picture Lab also has a five-year history of partnering with the library to present creative and innovative events for youth in our community.
