Lindsay Tebeck, Illustrator & Graphic Designer

How many years have you participated in ArtSquared and what gets you excited about this event?

Being that I’ve been in Colorado in previous years, this will be my first year participating in ArtSquared! What excites me is being able to see so many creative works in one place, along with the minds that made the pieces come to life. It’s wonderful to be able to attend an event that commemorates the vibrant talent and artistry that this town has to offer. I’m also enthused to know that the work I and fellow artists present at ArtSquared will have the chance to contribute to the Valley’s art education system.

What role does the artist and art play in a community?

For me, I feel it would be a waste of artistry not to use my illustrative background in order to question and challenge issues from time to time. Being an artistic individual means I have access to a visual voice, which I aim to use to tackle issues that are critical to me; whether they be social, political, or personal. I believe that the artist and her art can bring new discussion and shared experience to a community. Of course, I’m not disallowing myself to explore art simply for the sake of art either! After all, my ArtSquared pieces are simply a soft exploration of Walla Walla life.

Dianna Woolley, Encaustic & Mixed Media

How many years have you participated in ArtSquared and what gets you excited about this event?

As many years as the event has happened.

What role does the artist and art play in a community?

I believe the arts and artists involved, whatever the craft — music, dance, painting, sculpting, etc. serves to keep a culture of openness in a community’s life.  That openness is in the intake from an audience of artists’ crafts displayed in professional, pleasing, alarming, and sometimes provocative ventures. By viewing or participating in performance an audience’s collective heart, mind and spirit may be elevated to an opening of self, a yearning for self-fulfillment that would be unknown without the arts creating culture in a community.

Anne Haley, Printmaker

How many years have you participated in ArtSquared and what gets you excited about this event?

Since 2013, the first year of ArtSquared. Saying a big idea in a small amount of space—that is the challenge of working in a format that is six inches square.

What role does the artist and art play in a community?

Part of the conversation—beginning with an artist reflecting on his or her world however that is seen, felt, heard or imagined and revealing that personal perspective to other people.

My work is multi layered like the world around us. It is infused with a sense of place—wherever I am. It may be based on real places or imaginary landscapes. I combine elements of photography, drawing, painting, letterpress type and printmaking to render these ideas into visual art.

    Kimberly Wiessner, Watercolorist

How many years have you participated in ArtSquared and what gets you excited about this event?

This is my second year. I was thrilled to see folks purchasing stacks of these small paintings for their homes last year. An art buying frenzy! While I’ve moved away from Walla Walla my heart and the foundation of my relationship with art all started here with the Reflections contest in my kindergarten year. I still remember my entry vividly. I cannot imagine a better opportunity to give back to the Walla Walla valley and art community and I feel honored to be participating in this unique event.

What role does the artist and art play in a community?

Art is a the key cultural component of a community and the artists are the storytellers. It has been fascinating to move from the Pacific Northwest down to San Antonio, Texas this year and observing the unique and beautiful differences in these places. To know some of the artists and makers expressing stories of their culture and the context of their surroundings is inspiring.

      Bill Rodgers, Photographer

How many years have you participated in ArtSquared and what gets you excited about this event?

This will be my third year.  I have fun making the squares, and sharing them with the wide and supportive audience that attends the event. The event is great fun, because it attracts so many local artists working in varied media.

What role does the artist and art play in a community?

It’s really simple: Through their works, artists bring joy to those in the community who are exposed to their work and who enjoy it.
