    Hadar Ahuvia: February 25, 2019 @ 7:30 PM
//Followed by a post-performance discussion moderated by Associate Professor of Anthropology Suzanne Morrissey//
Hadar Ahuvia's "The Dances are For Us" performs an homage to and a break from a legacy of Zionist cultural workers by rearranging beloved Israeli folk songs and dances to face the Nakba. (Nakba, Arabic for catastrophe, refers to the expulsion and dispossession of the Palestinians in 1948 as a result of the founding of the state of Israel). The work builds on Ahuvia’s several research on the construction Israeliness in early Israeli folk dances based on appropriated indigenous cultures. While returning to the family history and national mythologies surrounding the Jezreel Valley/ Marj Ibn Amer where her great-grandparents settled and where the folk dances emerged, the work is grounded here in the U.S., where the dances are practiced by folklorists, Zionists, Jews and Christians alike. The work proposes a way of breaking the cycles of transmission, appropriation, and theft- across vast plains of ideological manifestations and technological advancements- that have present-day consequences for Palestinians, Israelis and Americans.

    Angie Pittman: March 5, 2019 @ 7:30 PM
//Followed by a post-performance discussion moderated by Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Culture Studies Matthew Reynolds//
Angie Pittman's "Sequined Kisses and Vaseline Love" is a diptych that grapples with ways to give love, receive love, be cool, be resilient, achieve survival, and daydream. Sequined Kisses... is an exploration of interiority, and its relationship to compression, love and joy within the context of historical trauma against Black folk. ...Vaseline Love centers “cool” as an African Diasporic concept through greasiness, lubrication, and James Brown cape choreography. Together, these two pieces are a journey towards what Donnell Alexander calls “finding the essential soul while being essentially lost.”

    Allie Hankins & Linda Austin: April 15, 2019 @ 7:30 PM
//Followed by a post-performance discussion moderated by Associate Professor of Art M. Acuff//
In "The Traveller and the Thief", Austin and Hankins collapse, expand, and steal time as they travel across landscapes filled with seemingly incongruous concepts, structures, desires, and energies. Inspired by surrealist artists Gertrude Abercrombie and Leonora Carrington, and the “uncanny fictive spaces” in the writing of Jen George, they juxtapose movement, object, words, and song to celebrate (or is it bemoan?) the unstable and precarious grounds of existence.

The Beaver Believers is a feature documentary sharing the urgent yet whimsical story of an unlikely cadre of activists - a biologist, a hydrologist, a botanist, an ecologist, a psychologist, and a sassy, spicy hairdresser - who share a common goal: to restore the North American Beaver, that most industrious, ingenious, bucktoothed little engineer, to the watersheds of the American West. The Beaver Believers encourage us to embrace a new paradigm for managing our western lands, one that seeks to partner with the natural world rather than overpower it. As a keystone species, beaver enrich their ecosystems, creating the biodiversity, complexity, and resiliency our watersheds need to absorb the increasing impacts of climate change.

Beavers can show us the way and do much of the work for us, if only we can find the humility to trust the restorative power of nature and our own ability to play a positive role within it. Shot in 8 western states, Mexico, and Canada, through desert drought, raging wild fires, forceful floods, and wetland tranquility, this film will change the way you think about climate change and inspire you to take a bite out of the challenges we face, one stick at a time.

    • 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM
    • The Dacres 207 W. Main Street, Walla Walla, Washington 99362

From Vancouver, Canada, ACTORS electrify with a modern take on post-punk. On debut full-length ‘It Will Come to You’, anthemic songs evoke the urgency of early-80’s U2 (Boy, October, War) as well as the driving, synth drenched scores that emanated from the era's movie screens. As scene authority Post-Punk.com puts it, the band conjures “cinematic new-wave... that belongs on a Michael Mann soundtrack.”
Frontman Jason Corbett’s rich vocals command with all the passion of a young Bono and the coolness of Peter Murphy. Songs like “L’appel du Vide,” “Slaves,” “Face Meets Glass,” and “Bury Me” are bangers that glisten via Corbett’s production job: slamming beats propel warm layers of synth, guitar, and vocals. Corbett writes, produces, mixes, and masters all ACTORS music at his own Vancouver studio, Jacknife Sound.
Corbett names David Bowie as a fundamental influence - Bowie’s sense of confidence and creativity are in full effect on ‘It Will Come to You’. But much more than a “retro” act, this is music that stands all on its own, full of life and unforgettable hooks. Perhaps best described as a “post-post-punk” band, ACTORS belongs in the discussion alongside bands of today like The Soft Moon and Cold Cave who are pushing music forward via a deep knowledge of the past.
Opening the show is Plasticstatic. They are an electronic and textural guitar band influenced by dark wave, shoegaze, and post-punk sounds. Some of their notable covers released via various tribute comps (in addition to their own albums) give a good idea the ground they tread: The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, Psychic TV, and Love And Rockets… a perfect match on this bill for those who dig their melancholy a bit catchy, and their darkness somewhat dancy.

    About Carter Winter

Fitting every bit the part of the man in black, Carter Winter is country music’s modern traditionalist. Singing heartfelt and relatable songs landscaping heartbreak and the American dream poured over ice, the singer/songwriter from rural Ohio has seen firsthand the effects of connecting with an audience through a fresh sound that like Carter himself, is surprisingly familiar, yet raw and honest. From behind his guitar and sleeves of tattoos, Carter began playing local bars around his hometown and quickly grew an incredible fan base of loyal listeners from California to the Carolinas. First well-known for his cover songs of artists that inspired him early on (Garth Brooks, George Strait), Carter’s ability to take three chords and his own truth and deliver a compelling live performance has contributed to the incredible success of Some Kind of Fire, his first independent six-song release. With his rich, traditional country vocal and compelling live performance, Carter has gained recognition from some of the biggest names in country music and shared the stage with artists such as Sam Hunt, Chase Rice and Travis Tritt. Recently completing his second studio album with multi Grammy Award-winning producer Chad Carlson (Taylor Swift, Chase Rice, Cole Swindell) and producer Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), Carter Winter’s sophomore release The Whiskey In Me makes a solid entry into country music that firmly establishes his bad boy brand as a natural force in country music.

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a collection of films that illustrate not only the challenges facing our planet but the work communities are doing to protect the environment and the places we love. The stories give us a sense of place and what it means to be responsible stewards of the earth.

In 2003 the Wild & Scenic Film Festival was started by the South Yuba River Citizens League, a watershed advocacy group. Its international tour to over 200 communities around the globe allows SYRCL to share its success as an environmental group with other organizations. The festival is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire activism.

The festival’s five National Partners: Peak Design, CLIF Bar, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Klean Kanteen, and Earthjustice. They help to bring these inspiring films to communities across the country.

The Blue Mountain Land Trust is delighted to host this festival with support from Nelson Irrigation Corporation. It is a natural extension of our work to inspire people to act on behalf of the environment.

Gesa Power House Theatre presents a local production of the play "A Doll’s House, Part 2" on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m.

In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking masterwork, "A Doll’s House," Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event—when Nora slams the door on everything in her life—instantly propelled world drama into the modern age.

"A Doll’s House, Part 2" was written by Lucas Hnath as a possible continuation of the Ibsen’s story. Fifteen years have passed, and now there is a knock on that same door – Nora has returned. But why? And how will her husband and family react to her reappearance?

“With unfussy eloquence, [A Doll’s House, Part 2] asks how much, in a century-plus, life has changed for Nora and women like her in a world that often still has firm ideas about where they belong.”
    – Hollywood Reporter

"A Doll’s House, Part 2" received eight 2017 Tony Award nominations when it debuted on Broadway. The play poses thoughtful questions about marriage, gender roles, and equality and works both as a sequel and as a stand-alone play. A familiarity with Ibsen’s "A Doll’s House" is not necessary to enjoy this play.

This production is directed by Nancy Simon, Professor Emerita at Whitman College where she taught theater classes and directed at Harper Joy Theatre for nearly 50 years. The cast is comprised of Shauna Bogley (Nora), Kevin Loomer (Torvald), Terri Trick (Anne Marie), and Kathryn Bogley (Emmy).

"A Doll’s House, Part 2" will be staged in three quarter round on the Gesa Power House Theatre stage. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and may be taken into the theater.

Reserved seating tickets will go on sale to the public on Monday, March 18, online (phtww.com) or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

The Dacres has partnered with Holocene Wines and Andrae's Kitchen to bring you a concert that will have the Walla Walla Valley buzzing with anticipation!! We are excited to announce that on Friday, May 10th Mudhoney will be ROCKING THE HOUSE at The Dacres!

Hailing from Seattle, Washington, Mudhoney has been on the Alternative Rock scene for 30 years. Mudhoney's early releases on the Sub Pop label, particularly their debut single "Touch Me I'm Sick" and the Superfuzz Bigmuff EP, were massively influential on the Seattle music scene. More than almost any other release of the era they inspired the dirty, high-distortion sound that would become grunge. Mudhoney also mixed heavy blues rock and punk rock into their sound which is sure to thrill our Walla Walla Valley audience!

    Tickets are available at www.thedacres.com

This is a 21+ and standing room only event with doors at 6:30.

After Babe shoots her abusive husband; the three Magrath sisters are back together in their hometown of Hazlehurst, Mississippi for the first time in a decade. Lenny, the caretaker of the sisters’ cantankerous Old Granddaddy, never left. Meg, the middle sister, left home to pursue stardom in Los Angeles, but has, so far, only found happiness at the bottom of a bottle. Babe, the youngest, has just been arrested for murder. Past resentments bubble to the surface and each sister must come to terms with the consequences of her own “crimes of the heart” in ways that enable them to redefine themselves as strong, independent women.

Featuring the Girsky String Quartet, Danza Classica Ballet Company, and choreography by Idalee Hutson-Fish

Few works in the chamber music repertoire communicate as fully to listeners of all stripes as does the String Quartet in F, Op. 96, by Antonin Dvorak. More immediately identifiable by its nickname, the “American,” this work has enjoyed a continuous place of prominence in the repertoire since its Carnegie Hall premiere in 1894 by the Kneisel Quartet. In fact, so significant is this music that it might be said to represent a glaring omission on the part of this Festival…

    No more!

We visit the vast production facility of Rôtie Cellars for this special performance. Why so vast a space? To accommodate the dancers, of course! That’s right, WWCMF is teaming up with the young virtuosi of Walla Walla’s Danza Classica Ballet Company to bring new and unique insights to this Romantic masterpiece. With choreography by Idalee Hutson-Fish and a musical performance by the Girsky String Quartet, it will be a celebration from start to heart-pounding finish.

    Doors open at 6 PM.

After four years and three months, two tours overseas with one tour of combat in Iraq as a United States Marine, Scott Brown traded his guns in for guitars and hit the road. Scooter Brown Band was formed in 2005 and played mainly in and around Houston, Texas. It wasn't until 2009 with the release of their first studio album, Between Hell & Texas, that they gained a notable presence in the Texas music scene. In 2010, Scooter Brown Band put out the album Live at Big Texas. In 2013, they followed up with their next studio album, Valor, and a self-titled album, Scooter Brown Band, in 2015. The band has toured the U.S., headlining shows and opening for some of the biggest names in the business including Charlie Daniels Band, Travis Tritt, Lee Roy Parnell and the Marshall Tucker Band, just to name a few. With two of the members being prior military, the band spends a lot of time doing work for Veteran Support Organizations like Base Camp 40 - Warriors in the Wild, Lone Survivor Foundation, and the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation. Defined as modern southern rock, the band released American Son in August 2017 and was named by Rolling Stone as a country “Artist to Watch” in December 2017. Purchase tickets  at thedacres.com
