    First Draft Writers’ Series

Every Third Thursday - Always FREE

The First Draft Writers’ Series brings authors and poets of note to the Pendleton stage to share new work. On the third Thursday of each month people who love the written word gather at the PCA’s Pearson Auditorium to hear our featured authors as well as three to five minute open mic readings by local emerging writers.

You can hear recordings of past events at the East Oregonian’s website.

The event is free to the public thanks to generous support from Oregon Cultural Trust and the Kinsman Foundation as well as from local sponsors and regional foundations. Our founding sponsors include Jan and Tom Groat, Delores and Steve Bjerke, and Barbara and Dale Brandt.

Audience members at First Draft love being immersed in the written word. Hearing those words straight from the author’s lips is often a soul-satisfying experience

Sit back and just listen or bring your own 3-5 minute piece to share during Open Mic.

Check the website to find the writers of the month!

‘Killing Fields’ is a photo-collage exploration of massacre sites occurring in the Pacific Northwest from early in the 19th century, as America pursued its’ “Manifest Destiny” of the north American continent. The exhibit is a memorial to the indigenous and immigrant people including Native Americans, Chinese Immigrants and American Settlers who lost their lives.
By creating this exhibit, the artist, James Cunningham, draws attention to the killing fields of our present time and the humanness of instinct: fear-of-the-other. In depicting these landscapes, Cunningham conveys this reality is never far beneath the surface.

Please join Crow’s Shadow in welcoming Marwin Begaye, our first Artist-in-Residence of the year, to the studio and to Pendleton. This will be a chance to meet the artist and see the work he has been making during this residency. Begaye will speak at about 5:30 and share his studio process with the public.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Marwin Begaye (Navajo/Diné) is an accomplished painter and printmaker, particularly known for his highly detailed linocut and woodblock carving. His imagery often combines figurative elements related to his cultural identity, along with ornately patterned backgrounds inspired by weaving designs. Begaye deploys humor and sharp-edged wit in some of his images that critique corporate advertising and “culture jamming”—when advertisers bombard the public with pop-culture messaging regardless of negative effects on people. Begaye is especially deft at indicating issues that affect Native people.

Begaye is an Associate Professor of Painting and Printmaking at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK). He has an MFA in Printmaking and a BFA in Painting, both from the University of Oklahoma, and also holds Associates degrees from the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe, NM) and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (PA). Begaye’s work has been exhibited extensively around the nation, as well as many international venues including shows in Argentina, Australia, China, Estonia, Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, and Russia. He is the recipient of multiple awards including the Oklahoma Visual Artists Coalition Visual Arts Fellowship in 2007, a Red Earth award in 2009, and earlier in 2018 was a guest Artist-in-Residence at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, NM, and a visiting guest artist at Goldsmith’s College in London, UK. This will be Begaye’s first time working at Crow’s Shadow Press.

Kick off Pride Month in Walla Walla with a party at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday, June 2 beginning at 7 PM. The fun begins with the screening of the new film “Saturday Church”, followed by a drag show hosted by Chardonnay and a few of her friends, and finally a dance party with music by DJ Lotek.

“Saturday Church” is a musical film written and directed by Damon Cardasis. It tells the story of 14-year-old Ulysses, who finds himself simultaneously coping with the loss of his father and adjusting to his new responsibilities as man of the house alongside his mother, younger brother, and conservative aunt. While growing into his new role, the shy and effeminate Ulysses is also dealing with questions about his gender identity. He finds an escape by creating a world of fantasy for himself, filled with glimpses of beauty, dance and music. “Saturday Church” received numerous awards at film festivals and was released in January. It has a runtime of about 90 minutes.

The fun continues with a 60-minute drag show hosted by Chardonnay and a few of her Walla Walla friends. Chardonnay is a sassy drag queen with a big heart filled with love and laughs. She got her start here in Walla Walla in 2014 and is now the drag mother of the “Haus of Tannins.” Chardonnay is a frequent performer around the Pacific Northwest and in Walla Walla.

The party continues with dancing and music by DJ Lotek. One low ticket price ($15) covers admission for the entire evening. All entertainment will be appropriate for ages 14 and up.

General admission tickets are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

Beethoven’s creative life is divided into three neat sections, Early, Middle and Late. The Early Period is defined by his tendency to shake up convention and thwart expectations with persistent and needling harmonic escapades and emphatic rhythmic accentuations where they don’t belong. In the Middle Period, Beethoven confronts form itself, testing the limits of Classical proportion. In the Late Period, Beethoven moves into a completely uncharted territory, looking ever inward. His shadow would loom large across the 19th century and beyond.

Here in the 21st century, we have the opportunity to visit with a remarkable violinist and WWCMF Lifer, Stephen Miahky. Steve played the first-ever June Portrait of an Artist recital back in 2013. He was in his Early Period back then. Life has thrown a lot his way in the last half-decade, and he has thrown a lot back. Welcome to his Middle Period!

Kick off the 2018 June Festival at Rasa Vineyards with Portrait of an Artist, Stephen Miahky 2.0. Back in 2013, we didn’t have the capacity to program works with piano at satellite locations like Rasa, but thanks to the inspired work of the Walla Walla Piano Group, we now benefit from a magnificent Steinway Grand in all of our locations. The program will include music of Mozart, Bach, Debussy/Heifetz, Mark O’Connor, and Ysaÿe.

Stephen Miahky, Violin; with Kristin Vining, piano; and Christina McGann, violin

At the age of 85, US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a lengthy legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. "RBG" is a revelatory documentary exploring Ginsburg's exceptional life and career.

This film has a runtime of 97 minutes. Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks will be available for purchase, and may be taken into the theater. Outside food and beverages are not allowed.

For our first Tasting Music presentation of the 2018 Season, we return to Walla Walla Vintners for an outdoor performance, weather permitting (bring a sweater or cardigan… it can be chilly, indoors or out!). We will explore Beethoven’s very first string quartet, his Quartet in D, Op. 18, No. 3 (don’t worry, we’ll explain all the numbers, and how something called “No. 3” can actually be No. 1).

With Haydn more or less out of the picture, Beethoven turned his attention from smaller forms like the string trio to the medium invented and perfected by Haydn before him, that of the string quartet. Publishing the work in 1801, Beethoven shows himself to be a quick study, seemingly mastering the sophisticated and conversational style of his former teacher with aplomb. Perhaps this will be your first string quartet… If so, like Beethoven before you, you have struck gold!

    Doors open at 5 PM.

Tonight we feature a World Premiere by composer Texu Kim, plus music of Beethoven and Clara Schumann with the Volta Piano Trio.

To kick off the 2018 Festival Series, WWCMF welcomes longtime friends, the Volta Piano Trio to perform the masterpiece by composer and pianist Clara Schumann, the Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17. It is often said that Clara Schumann took a backseat to her more famous husband, Robert. However, this is incorrect on two counts. First, Clara was known as a virtuoso pianist of the highest order throughout Europe, her fame exceeding that of her hubby during her 60-plus-year performing career. Second, you can’t take a backseat when you are the one driving the bus!

Also on the program is the world premiere of a duo for violin and cello by the composer Texu Kim and the Quartet in D Major, Op. 18, No. 3 by Beethoven. It is a concert of firsts…

But without a definitive biography, the unique personal journey of her rise to the nation’s highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans – until now. "RBG" is a revelatory documentary exploring Ginsburg's exceptional life and career.

This film has a runtime of 97 minutes. Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks will be available for purchase, and may be taken into the theater. Outside food and beverages are not allowed.

Reserved seating tickets ($15-$10 in advance, $20-$15 at the door) are available online (www.phtww.com) or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales, please call 509-876-1662.

Composed in 2004 for the violin studio of famed pedagogue Robert Lipsett at the University of Southern California, Gran Turismo is a virtuosic masterpiece for the rarely heard combination of eight violins. In fact, when eight violinists get together, a competition usually breaks out. The music world is a network wherein one or two degrees of separation are common among professional performers. Rather than insular, such closeness is a testament to the common paths and experiences shared by so many who “make it.” Here, the musicians of WWCMF pay homage to the original context of the work featuring an ensemble of teachers and their students past and present, all navigating the music world at different stages of career and education. As Founder and Artistic Director, I am always keenly aware of my lineage and make it a point to pay respect to the teachers who made me into the musician I am today.

Gran Turismo represents the intersection between composer Andrew Norman’s study of Italian Futurist Giacomo Balla and his brush with the popular car racing video game, Gran Turismo. Start your engines!

We are featuring music of Robert Schumann, György Kurtág, Josh Burel and Andrew Norman this evening.

Our second Festival Series performance invites the clarinet to the fore with works old and new. Robert Schumann, ever given to flights of fantasy, composed his Märchenerzählungen, Op.132 near the end of his compositional life. Loosely translated as “Fairy Tales,” this work for piano, viola, and clarinet does not tell any specific fairy tale but rather evokes certain tropes such as sparkling elven mischief, regal pomp and the lyricism of loneliness. György Kurtag provides modernist counterpoint to Schumann’s foray into the magical with his Hommage à Robert Schumann for the same instrumentation.

Also on the program are works by 21st-century composers Josh Burel and Andrew Norman. Burel, in his Andooni for clarinet quintet, mourns the Armenian genocide of 1915-1923 and Norman, in his Gran Turismo for eight violins imagines an Italian baroque ensemble revving its engines at the speed of an F1 race car. Though each piece inhabits its own unique sphere, each work shares an essential component of storytelling that looks both to the past and the future.

The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current production of Manon by The Royal Ballet on Wednesday, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. This performance is filmed live in London and rebroadcast to select theaters.

Manon’s brother Lescaut is offering her to the highest bidder when she meets Des Grieux and falls in love. They elope to Paris, but when Monsieur G.M. offers Manon a life of luxury as his mistress she can’t resist. With the Lescauts’ encouragement Des Grieux cheats at cards in an attempt to win Monsieur G.M.’s fortune. They are caught. Manon is arrested as a prostitute and deported to New Orleans, followed by Des Grieux. On the run, Manon dies from exhaustion.

Kenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. The premiere was given on March 7, 1974, with the lead roles danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and a touchstone of adult, dramatic dance.

MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas.

Reserved seating tickets ($15 Adults, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

Flutist Sarah Brady has been a Festival regular since her first visit in 2011. She is known for her commitment to pioneering modern music as a member of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and she is a devoted teacher at the Boston Conservatory. You might also find her onstage with the Boston Symphony or at a music festival in Italy. It just depends on the week.

Sarah gave a Portrait of an Artist performance back in 2013, but we feel greedy for having staged that event at a venue with only about 75 seats. This time we’ll give Sarah room to stretch out a bit and welcome a capacity crowd to beautiful Pepper Bridge Winery. Tasting Music 3 — Amy Beach, Theme and Variations for flute and string quartet, Op. 80

Amy Beach, or “Mrs. H. H. A. Beach,” as she was credited in her published music, was arguably the most important homegrown composer in the United States at the end of the 19th century.

A fixture in the musical scene of Boston, Amy Beach experienced triumphs unheard of for a female composer in Europe or America. She had a mass premiered by Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society in 1895, and her Third Symphony by the Boston Symphony in 1896. Both works received near universal praise from audience and critic alike.

Here we encounter Amy Beach in the more personal and private sphere of chamber music. Using her 1896 composition “An Indian Lullaby” as the principle theme, Beach shows her flair for romantic invention in this moving set of variations for flute and string quartet.

WWCMF is pleased to visit Doubleback Winery for the first time in their brand new facility.

We are featuring music by Amy Beach, Joan Tower, Marion Bauer and Gustav Mahler this evening.

Gustav Mahler is known as the composer of ten-ish unwieldy Symphonies, numerous song cycles, and as one of the most polarizing musical figures of the late 19th century. Noticeably absent from his compositional output are any substantive chamber works. There is one exception, however, that of a single movement for piano quartet in A minor. We pair Mahler’s single movement with music by three American composers, Amy Beach, Marion Bauer and Joan Tower.

Originally hailing from Walla Walla (woo-hoo!), Marion Bauer made her mark in New York City as a composer, author and professor, influencing such luminaries as Aaron Copland and Milton Babbitt. She was also the first in a long line of Americans to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Her three-movement Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 22, is required listening for any self-respecting music-loving resident or visitor to the Walla Walla Valley.

Rounding out the program are two works for flute and string quartet, the Theme and Variations, Op. 80, by Amy Beach and Rising, by Joan Tower (2009).

In 1945, World War II had turned decidedly in favor of the Allied Forces. United States GIs moved freely through war-torn Germany, eventually ending up on the front lawn of composer Richard Strauss. It was in this period that Strauss completed his paean to old Europe, Metamorphosen. Alex Ross, writing for The New Yorker, points out that Strauss, born in 1864 and dying in 1949, straddled impossibly disparate worlds, predating the German Empire and outlasting the Third Reich.

Metamorphosen, originally scored for 23 string players, is here condensed into the more intimate ensemble of string septet. Drawing heavily on the influence of Beethoven, Strauss actually quotes the famous Funeral March of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and cryptically places the words “In Memorium!” in the score above the quotation.

This Special Event will explore the deeply moving post-Romantic score, and revel in the lush sorrow of one of this great composer’s final works.

The Brahms Sextet in B Flat, Op. 18 is a work that begins in full melodic bloom. From the outset, the cellos predominate, both anchoring the ensemble’s sound and propelling its melodic potential. The inner movements contrast substance in the form of a theme-and-variations movement of stern intensity and a rollicking pastoral scherzo. The Finale is awash in lyricism and ultimately sprints to a joyous conclusion.

The premiere brought together a veritable 19th-century musical triumvirate in the form of violinist Joseph Joachim, pianist Clara Schumann and Brahms himself. We visit A. Morell Wines for the final Tasting Music event of the 2018 season.

We are featuring Clara Schumann’s Three Romances for violin and piano, the Popper Requiem in F Sharp minor, Op. 66 for 3 cellos and the Brahms B Flat Sextet, Op. 18 this evening.

Festival Series IV brings the 2018 Season to a close with works by Clara Schumann, David Popper and Johannes Brahms. The Popper Requiem in F Sharp minor, Op. 66, is not a vocal work. However, it capitalizes on the vocal qualities of three cellos in perfect harmony. Balancing the valedictory gravitas of the Popper are the Three Romances of Clara Schumann and the B Flat Sextet, Op. 18 of Johannes Brahms. If the Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, represents Autumn, then surely the B Flat Sextet represents Spring. Additional work, TBD. The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current Royal Ballet production of Swan Lake on Wednesday, July 18 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to the Walla Walla Symphony.

"Swan Lake" has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This Season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane.

Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night.

Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet score. Given its status today as arguably one of the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 "Swan Lake" was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that "Swan Lake" has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky’s score, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa’s royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov.

This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens.

Reserved seating tickets ($15 Adults, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase.

Gesa Power House Theatre launches the new Walla Walla Summer Stage Series with two musicals scheduled for Summer 2018. The second show of the series is "9 to 5" with performances on August 17 to 26. This production is directed by former New York director and Walla Walla native Tyson Kaup (Last 5 Years, Cabaret).

"9 to 5" features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, book by Patricia Resnick, and is based on the 1980 hit movie of the same name. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?

Auditions for the Walla Walla Summer Stage will be held in March.

What if your first true love was someone you’d been told you must hate?

Set in a world very like our own, this Romeo and Juliet is about a generation of young people born into violence and ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents.

The most famous story of love at first sight explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change, but leads all too quickly to heartbreaking consequences.

Reserved seating tickets ($15 Adults, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase.

Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the documentary film "I'll Push You" on Saturday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m.

It all started with three little words.

"I’ll Push You" is an up-close and personal look into the dynamics of a life-long friendship between two best friends – Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray – as they travel across El Camino de Santiago. This feature-length documentary covers the struggle of the 35-day, 500-mile wheelchair journey across mountains, deserts, hills, and valleys and features perspectives from family and friends. Even though the story begins with the challenge that comes with Patrick’s willingness to push Justin in a wheelchair across northern Spain, "I’ll Push You" also explores thestruggles related to Justin’s rare neurological disease. The parallel paths of Patrick’s experience in Spain and Justin’s life journey come together in a singular moment to reveal their similarities where Patrick discovers he’s both the pusher and the pushed. The story’s beautiful cinematography is set to poignant music tracks that underscore, perfectly, the inspiring example of love and vulnerability on display.

Their trek in 2014 captivated individuals around the world and was featured in the Huffington Post, The Meredith Vieira Show, Der Spiegel, Fox & Friends, and many other outlets. Since returning from Spain, Justin and Patrick have been sharing their message of hope, faith, and community worldwide.

Gesa Power House Theatre presents two screenings of "An American in Paris: The Musical" on Thursday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, September 23 at 2:00 p.m.

This breathtakingly-beautiful Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, inspired by the Oscar-winning MGM film, tells the impassioned story of discovering love in the "City of Light" in 1945. It features the gorgeous music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin, stunning designs, and show-stopping choreography.

With a record-setting 28 five-star reviews from critics, "An American in Paris" is an “old-fashioned, big-hearted spare-no-expense Broadway romance” (The Wall Street Journal).

Gesa Power House Theatre presents Chase Padgett in his one man show "Nashville Hurricane" on Saturday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m.

About 40 years ago, a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared from nowhere, conquered the music industry, and vanished without a trace… until now. Chase Padgett becomes a manager, a mother, a mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself as each one tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of: the Nashville Hurricane.

“If this isn’t worth 75 minutes of your time than I don’t know what is.”
    Houston Press

During the course of this one man masterpiece the audience learns about Henry Waltrip (the Nashville Hurricane) from his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white trash mother, Brenda, to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor, Tyrone. The stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants on love and music, a riveting tale involving the dark side of show biz, and blazing guitar work leading up to the finale - a one man acoustic rendition of "Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Gesa Power House Theatre presents country music prodigy EmiSunshine in concert on Saturday, November 3 at 8:00 p.m.

It’s nearly impossible to describe the exceptional talents of EmiSunshine, a 13-year-old East Tennessee prodigy who has captured the nation’s attention as a singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist.

Steeped in Appalachian music, Emi is a true vocal stylist. Influenced by legends who have made history (Loretta Lynn/Tanya Tucker/The Louvin Brothers), Emi has taken the world by surprise with her ability to combine her youthful, bubbly disposition with deep, meaningful and rather dark song content seeped in lonesome. Bringing her imagination to life, Emi has been able to write and record her own music, cementing her reputation as a well-crafted storyteller.

Since her break-out at 9 years old, this fearless performer has performed on The Today Show, The Grand Ole Opry, and at The Ryman, and has more than 500,000 Facebook followers.

While her music has been described as “old-timey," she adds her own unique blend of roots music that is equal parts Americana, bluegrass, gospel and country, with a sprinkling of the blues.

Reserved seating tickets ($35-$30) will go on sale to the public on Sunday, April 1, online at www.phtww.com or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.
