Art Opening: Conservation through Poverty Alleviation @ Brasserie Four

  • 21 Feb 2019
  • 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Brasserie Four 4 E Main St, Walla Walla, Washington 99362

For the months of February and March, Brasserie Four will be showing the tapestry works from the Madagascar based non profit, Conservation through Poverty Alleviation (CPALI). In their words, CPALI is "an international NGO dedicated to a community-centered approach to conservation. Instead of building boundaries, CPALI focuses on people and strengthens the existing relationship between local people and the environment through the development of sustainable livelihoods."

In their work, farmers from the Makira and Masoala Protected Areas of Madagascar learn to plant native plants which encourage silk worm production. The cocoons created by the silk worms are then ironed, washed, and sewn together to be dyed and formed into the bright, mesmerizing tapestries that we enjoy today.

Join us on Thursday, February 21st from 4pm-5pm to see these beautiful works and meet with Cay Craig, a local professor at Whitman College and founder and director of CPALI.
