Sheehan Gallery Exhibition: Gathering

The Sheehan Gallery is pleased to present Gathering: Selected Prints from Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts. As one of the gallery’s  2019 featured fall exhibitions, Gathering opens on September 3rd and will run through December 12th.

Formed in 1992 by regional artists James Lavadour (Walla Walla) and Phillip Cash Cash (Cayuse and Nez Perce), Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA) is located on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in the foothills of Oregon’s Blue Mountains. It is s a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide a creative conduit for educational, social, and economic opportunities for Native Americans through artistic development. Recognizing creativity as an intrinsic and essential element of Native American culture and committed to helping people, young and old, develop their artistic gifts and skills, over the last twenty-six years Crow’s Shadow has evolved into a world-class studio focused on contemporary fine art printmaking. In Gathering, the Sheehan’s three Alcove Galleries will display over thirty prints created through the collaboration of Native artists with one of Crow’s Shadow’s Master Printers. Among the seminal creators and ascending artistic voices included are::

Gabrielle Belz (Maori)

Ric Gendron (Colville, Umatilla)

Edgar Heap of Birds (Cheyenne) 

Frank LaPena (Wintu)

James Lavadour (Walla Walla)

James Luna (Payómkawichum)

Brenda Mallory (Cherokee)

Yatika Starr Fields (Osage, Cherokee, and Creek) 

Wendy Redstar (Crow)

Marie Watt (Seneca)

Excerpts will also be shown from The Myth of Creation, a collaboration between Native American and Indigenous New Zealand artists.


On Friday, October 11th, at 5:30 pm in Olin 138, Karl Davis,the Executive Director of Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, will speak about the development of Crow’s Shadow. There will be a public reception following this event and an evening showing of the exhibit.


The Sheehan Gallery is free and open to the public. Located in Olin Hall on the Whitman College campus, gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday, 12-5pm and Saturday/Sunday, 12-4pm or by appointment.
