President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Leonard Bernstein had a funny exchange following the latter’s White House performance in 1960. President Eisenhower said, “I like that last piece you played. It’s got a theme. I like music with a theme, not all them arias and barcarolles.” Ike’s pronouncement is understandable. Classical music, always full of themes, also has a lot of jargon. Sonata, Symphony, Concerto and Song are terms with specific meanings. But as terminology, they often end up sounding kinda the same, placeholders for classical music in general. All them sonatas and concertos, as it were.
WWCMF Founder & Artistic Director, Timothy Christie, will clear up all of the nomenclature while taking a look at two very valid sides of the same coin:
Heads: Why it matters.
Tails: Why it doesn’t matter at all.
Musical examples from Handel to Schoenberg abound. You may even discover the difference between an aria and a barcarolle.
Classes take place at 6 PM. You may attend live or on-demand.
