The next time you attend an orchestral performance (hopefully, it’s sooner than later!!!), take a look closer look at the musicians on stage. A large orchestral work by Gustav Mahler or Richard Strauss calls for an orchestra of 100 or more musicians. Of the 100, how many are Black, Indigenous or People of Color? Latinx? Do the musicians onstage resemble the demography of our society as a whole? In most cases, the answer is ‘no.’

WWCMF’s November Virtual Concert Hall event explores the topic of racial equity in classical music in a program of music by composers and performers of color. Violinist and WWCMF “lifer,” Philip Payton curates the program from New York City with colleagues Orlando Wells, violin; Will Frampton, viola; and Alberto Parrini, cello. The program features works by William Grant Still, Jessie Montgomery and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson.

Performances take place at 6 PM. You may watch live or on-demand.
