Summer Stage Festival: What They Said About Love

  • 08 Aug 2021
  • 3:00 PM

The Walla Walla Summer Stage Festival includes What They Said About Love presented on the main stage at Gesa Power House Theatre on Sunday, August 8 at 3:00 p.m.

Steve Budd wonders why other people can and he can’t–tie the knot, that is. So he asked couples about the push and pull of love—what keeps them from pulling apart despite annoying the heck out of each other. Meet a New Age couple that swears they met before they met, a pair of Metal Heads who thought it would be a hoot to get married on 6-6-06, and more.

Satisfy your voyeuristic tendencies about how others look for love—and, in some cases, find it. This is documentary theater at its best, a la Anna Deavere Smith. Steve Budd brings 12 characters to life, using their words from hours of interviews, and weaves in the story of his own search for a life partner. The piece was directed by Mark Kenward, and developed with the help of David Ford at The Marsh, with additional assistance from John Coppola and Slater Penney. Skye Pelicrow served as script consultant.

What They Said About Love is a hit with audiences and critics, enjoyed an extended run at The Marsh in Berkeley and San Francisco in 2018, won Best of the 2016 San Francisco Fringe, and was a Theatre Bay Area Top 5 Solo Production of 2018.

Steve Budd is an actor, writer, storyteller, standup comic, and award-winning solo performer living in Oakland, California. He has trained at The Marsh in S.F. and with The Groundlings in L.A. Originally from Boston, Steve has performed with the San Francisco Playhouse, Custom Made Theatre, New Conservatory Theatre Center, Central Works, Impact Theatre, Marin Shakespeare, Wheelock Family Theater, The Theater at Monmouth, and The English Theatre Company of Israel.
