Over the past year, I have been collaborating with local musician Robert Gomez to create a musical work based on a weaving draft. The evening will showcase the work: Robert will perform two new works based on this collaboration - a strict interpretation of a weaving draft as well as one of more nuance - amidst a room-filling weaving installation at the Cotton Wool.
Growing up, I was trained in classical piano. The many hours spent practicing and performing at the piano developed in me a deep appreciation for music and the effect it has to transport us out of the everyday.
Having now studied weaving nearly as long as I did piano, I see how the study of music informs my weavings. The weaver's grid and notations – how weavers create pattern and pass them on – is much like a musical score. Even the physical act of weaving, hands in motion while feet pedal/work the treadles, are very familiar to how a piano is played.
This event is an exploration in my own curiosity of these two mediums.
We hope you will join us for this special event.
