  • The Walla Walla Mokuhanga Center will host a five day workshop that will allow students to learn the art of Mokuhanga woodblock printing in detail with renowned artist Yasuyuki Shiata. Students will gain a deeper appreciation for the history, culture, and physical process of creating Japanese-style woodblock prints through demonstrations and hands-on studio time.

Japanese Woodblock Printmaking


The Walla Walla Mokuhanga Center will host a five day workshop that will allow students to learn the art of Mokuhanga woodblock printing in detail with renowned artist Yasuyuki Shiata. Students will gain a deeper appreciation for the history, culture, and physical process of creating Japanese-style woodblock prints through demonstrations and hands-on studio time.

In conjunction with the Mokuhanga lessons, the summer program will also introduce Japanese flower arrangement, calligraphy, and the art of serving tea in the Yabunouchi Tradition. 

The Mokuhanga workshop will also include talks on Bonsai and garden design and special tours that will explore the Walla Walla valley to learn about salmon safe programs for wineries and current conservation projects including the establishment of special bunch grass areas.  

Faculty:

Mokuhanga Woodblock Printmaking - renowned artist Yasuyuki Shibata, a teacher at Cooper Union and Master Printer for Pace Graphic Center in New York.

Flower Arrangement - Yabe Keishū, one of the most prominent teachers at the headquarters of the Sōgetsu School of Flower Arrangement in Tokyo and one of the leading instructors of the Kyoto Branch of the Sōgetsu School of Flower

Calligraphy - Fujii Yoshiyasu, master calligrapher who teaches in Seattle, Portland, and Tokyo will give demonstrations and join Shibata-sensei and Yabe-sensei in preparing a special exhibit of their art at the Foundry Winery Gallery.  

Materials: 

Materials will be provided at an extra cost. A separate payment will be issued at the beginning of June. 

Activities:

The Walla Walla Foundry will hold an opening reception of Yasutuki Shibata's work and the Mokuhanga Workshop on Sunday, June 26 from 5-8pm - refreshments provided. 

The Walla Walla Foundry will also hold a Fujii Yoshiyasu demonstration and Mokuhanga Workshop Dinner on Thursday, June 30th at 5pm. 

Alongside the workshops, we will provide two dinners and two lunches throughout the week. For those staying overnight, breakfast materials will be provided.

The Walla Walla Foundry will have their first Fujii demonstration open to workshop members and the Walla Walla community on Wednesday, June 29 at 5pm. 

Lodging:

Whitman College has reserved rooms in the Marcus Dormitory for workshop students. 

Rooms include a twin bed, desk, dresser, and overhead lighting. Linens are provided which include 2 bath towels, 1 hand towel, 2 sheets, a blanket, pillow, and pillow case.
